| Why Liberia Matters: A Humanitarian Crises |
| • 250,000 Liberian people were killed in the war over the past 13 years. Almost 10% of Liberia’s population of 3 million, including children, women and civilians were brutally murdered in the fighting. • 1 million people are currently displaced in Liberia. One in every three Liberians is homeless as a result of homes being looted, burned and completely destroyed in the war. • Liberia’s infrastructure is destroyed. There is no electricity and little clean water. Hospitals and schools are completely decimated. • More than 250,000 refugees fled to the Liberian capital city, Monrovia, searching for food and shelter. • Cholera and starvation threaten the lives of those not killed by gunfire. • Crimes against humanity are widespread as marauding rebels raped women and girls during the war. Many women and girls are in dire need of emotional, spiritual and psychological counseling/assistance. • Child soldiers fought for years under the influence of marijuana and alcohol and now suffer severe psychological and emotional trauma. Former child soldiers are desperately in need of psychological and emotional counseling/assistance. |

| Kate Wright and her daughter are among some 250,000 refugees in the Liberian capital, Monrovia. She told BBC News Online, “Monrovia is a living hell because almost all the basic necessities are difficult to come by. Here we have a shortage of food, a shortage of water, a shortage of medicines, a shortage of everything that a human being needs to survive.” |
